I’m not a fan of South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws as they are currently constituted, but this is false. To imply that South Africa’s BEE laws, intended precisely to rectify Apartheid’s discrimination, are as oppressive as the Apartheid system, because of some specious numerical comparison is just ridiculous. The overall impact of oppressive laws against black South Africans, starting with the denial of an effective vote, is off the charts compared to the comparatively lightweight discrimination imposed by BEE laws. And BTW there were thousands of laws that effectively discriminated against blacks, not hundreds, because many of the restrictions were framed in geographic not racial terms. But I’m also a strong supporter Starlink being allowed to operate in SA; what is discriminatory is that SA allows hundreds of tech companies including Microsoft and Apple to operate in SA applying BEE equity equivalents, but not Starlink. That is not right.
