The region's digital ecosystem is unevenly distributed within and between countries. This is affecting the impact of start-ups on jobs to remain geographically limited due to their location in urban centers.
North Africa is the best‐connected region on the continent. This is mainly due to a favorable ecosystem that is characterized by strong government support and private sector involvement.
Despite North Africa’s lead and continued growth in mobile phone penetration rate and 4G-coverage, the region is still characterized by a weak start-up development.
Thanks to the mobile money revolution, Kenya has created the technological foundation to establish the fourth largest tech ecosystem in Africa. In 2018, the sector contributed more than USD 1 billion to Kenya’s economy.
Africa’s digital transformation is expanding to all economic sectors. Currently, over 640 tech hubs exist across the continent.
The country with the most tech hubs is Nigeria (90). Yabacon Valley, Lagos' digital ecosystem, is worth an estimated USD 2 billion.
