Until the mid-1960s, Nigeria didn't have one unified police force, each region (North, East, West) ran its own.

That changed after the 1966 pogroms, when Northern regional police were implicated in the violence against Igbo civilians that helped trigger the lead-up to the Biafran war.

In response, the Gowon military government began dismantling the regional forces, folding everything into a single federal Nigeria Police Force. The process started in October 1966 and wasn't fully complete until 1972...the exact year this photo is dated!

So officers training at Police College Lagos in 1972 would have been graduating into a police force that had just been completely restructured, no more regional loyalties, one federal command, fresh out of a civil war that ended in January 1970.

that's the real, forgotten backdrop most people don't know when they see old uniformed photos like this.
