5 days ago, I received an email that my Canadian Visa had been suspended because of Ebola (with a promise to re-activate.)
@USEmbassyUganda temporarily paused Visa operations over the same…
@KLM seems to have suspended flights, cancelled visits by tourists… and the list goes on!
We appreciate the need for vigilance in protecting public health and preventing disease spread. However, some of these measures raise concerns about proportionality, especially given that it is over a limited Ebola outbreak
Uganda has one of Africa’s strongest outbreak surveillance and response systems, built through decades of successfully containing Ebola and other public health threats. The current situation involves very limited cases and does not warrant treating an entire nation of close to 50million people as a risk.
Precaution is necessary. Blanket restrictions are not.
Uganda deserves to be judged by the strength of its response, not by its proximity to a neighboring country facing a different situation.
