The mortuary at Makumbe Mission Hospital in Domboshava, the largest medical institution in Goromonzi district, Mashonaland East province, has a carrying capacity for only three bodies - that for a medical facility with a catchment area of about 600 000 people.
A morgue attendant at the hospital told members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health and Child Care that there is a serious crisis on how to accommodate bodies of the dead once they are more than three at a time.
Corpses are usually dumped on the hospital floor if three bodies from across the district - some from 100km away - arrive for storage before burial.
The mortuary cannot cater for more than half a million people living in the district.
Goromonzi is one of nine districts in the province.
The catchment area for the hospital, which is located 32 kilometres north-east of Harare, is about 600 000 people.
It covers an area totalling 2 459 square kilometres or 254 072 hectares.
The health sector is currently in intensive care unit facing dire challenges, including a shortage of medical supplies, lack of funding and brain drain as healthcare professionals emigrate en masse.
Hospitals and clinics in Zimbabwe are now mainly places where people go to die.
The appalling state of the health sector reflects the parlous health of the economy.
