"Why Nations Fail is overrated. Partly because many people read it and then stop there. They do not engage critically with it or read the scholarship that critiques, builds on or has evolved since the book came out. The book becomes almost like a Bible that gets quoted again and again."
I welcome the #Pakistan Supreme Court's decision to transfer @ImranKhanPTI from jail to hospital within 2 days. According to independent media reports, the court also ordered that the former Prime Minister's medical care be overseen by a professional medical board including his personal physician; that his right to weekly in-person meetings with family members be restored; and that he be able to speak with his sons. This is very positive.

Breaking news
Netanyahu just claims there are growing signs that the Iran Supreme Leader is dead.
But the other side Iran denounces the claim and said that Supreme Leader is alive and will be on TV for speech.
FBR has invited budget proposals from the business community for the Finance Bill 2026, aiming to strengthen progressive taxation and increase the tax incidence on affluent segments.
The proposals will focus on broadening the tax base, expanding the GST regime across the full value chain, phasing out exemptions and concessions, simplifying tax laws, improving ease of doing business, and reducing tax distortions to enhance economic efficiency.
This analysis by @AtifRMian overlooks three fundamental realities.
First, the past cannot be undone. As Oscar Wilde observed, “No man is rich enough to buy back his past.” Decades of accumulated losses are sunk costs and were never saleable to investors. Public policy must be judged on future value creation, not on attempts to recover irrecoverable history.
Second, it ignores what has materially changed. The financial hemorrhage has been arrested, and total liabilities—widely reported to be around Rs 800bn—have been structurally rationalised. Approximately Rs 600–620bn of legacy obligations have been ring-fenced in a holding company, leaving the operating airline to be transferred with residual liabilities of roughly Rs 180bn and a far cleaner balance sheet. Media reports also suggest that part of the ring-fenced liability may unwind further, potentially reducing overall public-sector exposure to around Rs 565bn. These figures are indicative rather than precise, but the direction is unambiguous: legacy burdens have been isolated and the operating entity stabilised.
Third, the upside is materially underestimated. A viable airline is being created with over Rs 135bn of fresh equity capital, improved capital structure, and clear competitive advantages over domestic and regional peers. In present-value terms, the future tax revenues and economic spillovers from a successful airline can reasonably exceed the residual legacy burden.
The correct benchmark is not the illusory goal of “recovering past losses,” from investors but whether this structure converts a perpetual fiscal drain into a long-term generator of value and tax revenue. Judged on that basis, this is a brilliant transaction that has the potential of turning a huge burden on the public into a major asset for the country.

If Pakistan wants 50 years of growth, it must first break the mindset that produced 50 years of stagnation.
Atif Mian’s 5/50 vision is a valuable reminder that Pakistan needs long-term ambition, not endless firefighting. But it overlooks the real barrier: our political economy. Policies don’t fail because they’re wrong — they fail because the incentive structure rewards rent-seeking, informality, and patronage, not productivity or exports.
Sustained growth will come only when the incentives of those at the helm change. And mindsets change only under pressure: when crisis becomes existential, when new winners — exporters, taxpayers, the digital economy — demand rule-based governance, when digitisation makes old rent channels unworkable, and when external anchors make reform the safer political option.
Pakistan doesn’t need new slogans. It needs a new incentive structure.
Only then can the 5/50 aspiration become a credible national trajectory rather than another unrealised plan.

Pakistan’s “Hybrid” growth model is collapsing:
– Poverty: 25% (national), 45% (intl)
– 37% youth NEET (neither in work nor education)
– GDP per capita growth ~2% (half South Asia)
– Debt trap: >70% of GDP, interest eats 50% of revenue
– Exports stagnant at ~$30bn vs Bangladesh $55bn+
A vicious cycle of low growth → high poverty → debt → IMF bailouts.

PSX hit 100,000 level! 🇵🇰
Up 150% only in 17 month. Fiscal & external discipline, steep fall in pace of inflation, cut in interest rates, stability in currency, improving FX & ratings, outlook upgrades have all improved investor sentiment.
PSX now stands 2nd best globally!
Being a Student of Business,Protest shouldbe end & talks shouldbe done for country's current politico-economic scenario, which isn't very well in reality vs govt given data of economic stabilisation and growth.

Pakistan's military-backed rulers are now threatening to shoot protesters. Britain cannot be indifferent to the fate of a country to which we are so closely linked. The authorities must:
🔴Release @ImranKhanPTI
🔴End violence against civilians
🔴Schedule free elections

My message to the people of Pakistan 🇵🇰: Please collect more taxes from the wealthy and please protect the poor people of Pakistan. I do believe that this is in line with what people in Pakistan would like to see for the country.

Dr. Salam founded SUPARCO in 1961. Rehbar-1 was launched on 7 June 1962 (in 9 months). This surprised NASA!
History and contemporary evidence make one thing clear: progress of a country depends on the choices we make: #Science & #Technology or Religious extremism? Talent or bigotry? Serving narrow interest of elites or laying the foundation of widespread prosperity?
