To expand, almost every ninja showing in anime has been inspired by Japanese Folklore.

Walking on water, substitution jutsu, transformations, clones, ninjutsu, etc...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's in their culture to adapt things mentioned in folklore.

People love making fun of Samurai 8 for how badly it flopped, but I honestly think it's pretty tragic. Kishimoto finally got to write the series he always wanted to make, only for it to fail. Now he's a one-hit wonder, stuck with Naruto forever.
