Terfs and transphobic cis women, we just want to be respected as women. Why is that so hard to grasp? I can’t get periods, get pregnant, or have a uterus, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t experienced womanhood. I know my experience is different from yours, but that doesn’t make it any less real to me. Why are some of us fighting each other over this?
We are fighting for all women’s rights, not just trans women’s rights. And honestly, seeing women tear each other apart over this hurts. The patriarchy already gives us enough reasons to fight for our dignity, our safety, our bodies, and our freedom. Why are we turning that anger toward each other?
The patriarchy benefits when women are divided. It benefits when we are taught to question each other, judge each other, compete with each other, and decide who is “woman enough.” Why are we helping it do that?
I don’t want to take anything away from cis women. I don’t want to erase your experiences. I want you to understand that I’m asking for the same basic thing you are: to be seen, respected, and allowed to exist without someone else deciding what my body has to look like for me to deserve that respect.
Some of you say we have male privilege. No, we don’t. Whatever privilege you believe someone had before transitioning doesn’t mean they continue to experience that privilege afterward. Once we transition, many of us are treated as less than women, judged, rejected, discriminated against, and made to feel like we constantly have to prove that we belong.
And why are we reducing womanhood to body parts? Is having a vagina and boobs really the only thing that makes someone a woman? What about cis women who can’t have children? Women who have had hysterectomies? Women who have had mastectomies? Are they somehow less of a woman because their bodies don’t fit someone else’s definition?
A woman is more than her uterus. More than her breasts. More than her vagina. More than her ability to reproduce.
I know I will never experience every part of womanhood that a cis woman experiences. And I don’t expect to. But I have still lived my life as a woman. I have experienced the joy, pain, fear, vulnerability, expectations, judgment, and struggles that come with being seen and living as a woman.
I’m not asking you to erase your experience to validate mine. I’m asking you to make room for mine, too.
Because at the end of the day, we are all women trying to live our lives, feel safe, and be treated with dignity. We shouldn’t have to destroy each other to prove that our own womanhood is valid.
The patriarchy already wants women divided. It already wants us questioning ourselves and each other. Please don’t let it convince us that the woman standing beside us is our enemy. We deserve better than that.
