Welfare keeps your head down and your hand out; and never solves the problem. Don't do it unless you absolutely have to.

In 1983, my husband and I lost both our jobs at the same time and could not find work. We had two babies and were at the end of our rope financially. We went to the welfare office to get help and cried all the way home. We were taught it was not good to take government help and were ashamed.

I went to my mother, who was managing apartments, and asked if I could clean some vacancies for money to buy groceries. She hired me and taught me how to clean apartments the way a manager wants them done: white-glove and sparkling. Pride in everything you touch.

After buying groceries with the money she gave me, I had $10 left. I had business cards made—"D.L. Detail Cleaning"—and went to every apartment complex and management company I could find.

After about a week of pounding the sidewalks, I went to a complex and the manager asked if we could paint and clean the carpets as well. I looked her in the eye and said, "My husband and I can do anything you need." She answered, "Good, I have 52 units that need to be turned. We just took over this complex and can't find anyone willing to take them on; they are really bad."

She wasn't kidding—they were awful and gross—but the idea of being on welfare was worse to us, than cleaning these filthy apartments. I called my husband and informed him he was no longer unemployed, told him what happened, and that we needed to rent a paint rig and carpet cleaner. We sold some things, took the money, and rented them. We started work 3 days later and did those 52 units with 2 weeks of 20-hour days. I proudly called the welfare office and told them we would not need their help after all.

At those low-income complexes, we met women on welfare with multiple kids running everywhere, laying by the pool, taking good care of themselves at the salons, looking for the next baby daddy because they liked the increase in their assistance. This abuse is real; I saw it firsthand and felt so badly for those children who would be stuck in this cycle of dependence.

That first year we made $65,000; the second year, over $100,000—just the two of us, with our kids with us when my mom could not babysit, and a lot of hard work. We did work no one else wanted. After a while, we were so busy we did not have to do those types of places anymore. 45 years later, we retired with a home that is paid off and debt-free, head held high.

NEVER GIVE UP. No matter who you are, you can find something to do, and you will feel better about who you are in the end.
