Although it may be tempting to excuse child labor due to its prevalence and deep-rooted presence in social and cultural norms, we cannot ignore the profound, life-altering impact it has on children.
We must work towards creating a world where children are free from exploitation.
The ACLAWA Project has been beneficial to many children and communities in Nigeria through its commitment to combatting Child Labour.

On October 31, the ILO met with media leaders in Lagos to drive support for the Labour Standards Billโa key step in modernizing protections for workers, including children at risk of child labour.
This is to advance decent work and safe labour standards in #Nigeria#LabourReform
This convergence funded by @USDOL through the ACLAWA project was to advocate for the Labour Standards Bill, strengthen protections for workers, especially those in the informal sector and emphasize the urgency of eliminating child labour.

35.6% of children aged 5-17 in Ondo State are involved in child labour, with agriculture accounting for a significant portion. ILO in collaboration with civil society organizations, labour unions (Nigeria Labour Union, Trade Union Congress) & govt officials convened in Akure.
On October 15-17, we inaugurated SCREAM Clubs across 10 communities in Ondo State, uniting over 400 students to combat child labour. Supported by the ILO, Federal Ministry of Labour and local leaders, these clubs empower children to advocate for their rights and spread awareness.
With over 62 million children at risk globally, including those in sectors like gold mining, the time for action is now.
How can you contribute to this effort and make a difference?

On July 15, 2024, a monumental step was taken in Nigeria as the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the Project Advisory Committee (PAC), tasked with overseeing three critical projects designed to eliminate child labour.
Today, I had the pleasure of receiving the United States Department of Labour (USDOL) Labour Attache, Mr. Mike Berentson, in my office. Mr. Berentson's courtesy visit aimed to introduce himself as the new US Labour Attache and outline his objectives, which include collaborating with our Ministry to address labour issues and foster smooth labour relations during his two-week stay in Nigeria.
I expressed sincere appreciation to the US government for its invaluable support in combating child labour in Nigeria through initiatives such as the Action Against Child Labour in Agriculture in West Africa (ACLAWA) and the Global Accelerator Lab 8.7 (GALAB). I urged Mr. Berentson to build on the accomplishments of his predecessor and introduce innovative ideas, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Also, I received the National Workplace Gender Policy, presented by stakeholders and delegations from OXFAM in Nigeria, POISE Nigeria, VOICE, and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs. This policy seeks to eliminate gender-based discrimination in the workplace, aligning with the International Labour Organization's Conventions 111 on Discrimination and Equal Remuneration. It also supports the Renewed Hope Agenda's objectives, including women's empowerment, social inclusivity, food security improvement, poverty alleviation, economic growth, and job creation.
