By design, the human body has the capacity to heal itself. It has its own defence and cleansing systems.

It only fails to heal itself when there is a defect or an overload on the systems. This is when we need help in the form of medicines.

It stands to reason that if we correct the defects or remove the overload, our bodies will return to its default state.

I will use two examples: cancer and infection.

One of the reasons cancer happens is because of a defect in the way our bodies regulate growth. The body sends a signal to stop cells from growing and basically program their own death so that new cells can take their place.

However, in cancer, some rogue cells want to live forever and don’t listen to the stop signals. So they keep growing, encroaching into the spaces of others and putting a strain on the overall system; just like most Nigerian and indeed global politicians.

That strain makes the body to be overwhelmed causing a myriad of symptoms depending on where they are encroaching. It could be weight loss, bleeding, vomiting, just name it. I won’t go into medical jargons for the sake of my non-medical readers.

So if we can’t get these rogue cells to listen, we may as well cut them off which is why surgery helps in some cancers. But sometimes the rogue cells have eaten very deep into the body such that cutting them will be the same as killing the person.

Doctors then use drugs (chemotherapy, immunotherapy) and radiation to try to pick out these cancer cells. Sometimes it doesn’t work because the cells have mimicked the normal cells and are then being protected by the normal cells. A bit like how some people protect politicians for their own selfish gain, not knowing they are killing us all.

Forgive me, I digressed into politics again. Now on to infections. First off, our bodies have white blood cells (WBCs) which are the fighters in our blood. Think of them as security men that maintain order in a place.

So when you enter into a bank you will see a few security men. Those are your white cells. They would usually not be armed with guns.

However, if someone is being troublesome in one part of the bank, there will be more security men deployed to help calm the situation there.

That’s why your body produces more white blood cells if there is any infection or disease causing trouble for it.

But if the person causing the trouble is like John Wick and is overpowering them, the bank manager will call the police.

This is where you will need drugs like antibiotics to support your white cells to fight off the bacteria or whatever is causing the problem. And we can escalate as much as needed even if we have to call the beekeeper to take care of John Wick.

Infections may become resistant to antibiotics if the infection has seen the antibiotics finish (only Nigerians will understand the see-finish phrase, but you can ask ChatGPT).

This is why you don’t need to take antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary. Because if the infection becomes resistant to antibiotics and has already overpowered your white cells, your system will be overwhelmed and you will die of something that Nigerian internal medicine physicians like to call “overwhelming sepsis”.

Finally, please do all you can to maintain the integrity of your body’s healing capacity. Stop smoking, stop alcoholism, eat right, exercise regularly and keep a positive mindset.
