journalism is so bad nowadays that so many outlets can’t even connect the dots. they keep framing this as “bts refused to submit after the grammys created an asian category,” but they never explain the implications. SWIM and NORMAL are in english, so bts likely wouldn’t have been pigeonholed into that category this time around. they were widely predicted to have one of the biggest grammy years of their career and still walked away.

the statement wasn’t just about themselves—it was a blanket “fuck you” to an academy that keeps dividing music by language and region, and to what that means for every foreign artist and artist of color going forward, bts included.
