Wish people would understand that once primary forest is gone it’s GONE!
Planting trees is fine but secondary forest will take DECADES if not centuries to recover enough to hold the majority of diversity again. ❌🌳
Protecting forest needs to be a way bigger priority than planting trees!!
Secondary forest corridors are obviously insanely important but the planet needs to band together to keep all the primary tropical rainforest that is left intact! 🌿

Every time I remember the DISK we used to receive for speaking Kiswahili or mother tongue, I understand more clearly, as an adult, just how deeply colonialism was embedded in our upbringing, and how many of its scars we still carry.

We were being punished for speaking our own language. Shamed for expressing our own identity. And it was not merely a slap on the wrist. We were beaten, heavily, for something that should never have been considered wrong in the first place.

Imagine being taught to associate your own language with punishment and humiliation, while being conditioned to believe that another language made you more intelligent, more civilised or more worthy.

That is how colonialism works. It does not only conquer land. It colonises the mind, reshapes identity and teaches you to be ashamed of yourself.

And sometimes, the most painful part is realising how much of that conditioning survived long after the colonisers left.
