It's very simple, on Economic freedom (things like starting a business, importing/exporting), Singapore rates very highly.

On personal freedom, it's down around 80th because of state over reach.

The state takes 37% of your income into the CPF in addition to tax, builds and owns most houses, plus dictates which races live in which housing projects, and owns the ports, airport, airline, trains, utilities, infrastructure, and some banks.

If we could shrink Federal Government to the share of GDP that it was 20 years ago we could save $100 Billion a year.

Obviously one can argue at the margins here but the point is a pretty clear one.

This doesn’t include State Governments, which I suspect in some cases (Victoria) are even worse in terms of expansion.
