I loathe this type of historical revisionist claim so much.

Yes, we had mass immigration from countries that neighbored or were within a train ride of the country from which the founding stock of America came. We had a whole bunch of Irish and Italians get shipped over from famines and wars. Even some Germans and Scandinavians too.

The result was that some of those populations formed ghettos and slums and engaged in industrial scale criminality. For the Irish it was gangs, which had to basically get shanghai'd into military service where the Irish Brigade became an avenue through which Irish men could prove their loyalty to America through the horror of the Civil War.

Many rowdy Irish also got corralled into public service because of their distinct characteristics, becoming police officers and fire fighters. Just go to Boston and you'll see what I mean, it remains a tradition to this day.

Italians likewise were a huge problem, creating the Mob and Mafia, and essentially running organized crime in large swaths of the country for generations. Most of the gun laws that we hate now were written in response to their violence.

Much like the Irish, the Italians were pacified not just through brutal social policing by the native white population in ways that would now be portrayed as horrible and wicked, but also through forced conscription to war. Italians fought against their own home country in WWII, imagine asking your average Mexican or Indian or Somali to do that now.

People talk about assimilation like it's supposed to just be about learning non-regional dialect English and wearing a polo, but it's actually a much more creatively destructive force that has largely been banned (by the CRA of course). Assimilation is just a euphemism for socially enforced discrimination. The discrimination is part the process. You don't just get accepted, you have to prove yourself. The Irish and Italians proved themselves, and largely abandoned their native habits apart from some novel quirks of cuisine or alcohol consumption.

The Irish and Italians were assimilated by crushing them into dust and then spreading that dust across the fields and cities of America and letting the seeds try to grow among the towering trees of the native WASP Americans who made America a place to flee to in the first place. You want to stand shoulder to shoulder with the descendants of George Washington and Robert E Lee? Prove it.

Also, as I said earlier, the Irish were a stone's throw from England and Scotland. The Italians just a little further. Both struggled greatly and required immense pacification. Such a process becomes functionally impossible with groups at scale from anywhere other than Western Europe.

Assimilation is violent, and most even hardline GOP voters don't have the stomach to engage in the cultural policing necessary for real assimilation to take place.

Absent assimilation the only other recourse is remigration, and remigration is the ONLY option for non-assimilable cultures. Actually the only other option is balkanization, but I refuse to cede an inch of territory so hard-won by our forebears. The quicker we realize this the quicker we can quit opining on political theory and psychology and start talking about logistics.
