When I visited Garki Market on Thursday, I saw a section where people sell only donkeys.
One donkey was selling for between โฆ100,000 and โฆ250,000.
But as I made enquiries, I realised that there is much more to this animal than what many of us know.
Let me share a few interesting things about donkeys.
1: DONKEYS ARE PART OF THE AGRICULTURAL LOGISTICS BUSINESS.
In many communities across Northern Nigeria, donkeys are used to transport farm produce.
They help farmers move grains, vegetables, firewood, water and other goods from farms and rural settlements to nearby markets.
For communities with limited access to motorised transportation, donkeys remain an important means of moving goods.
2: DONKEYS ARE ALSO USED FOR MEAT.
Yes, donkey meat is consumed in some parts of the world.
There are markets where donkey meat is sold for human consumption, and it has commercial demand in certain countries.
This means the donkey value chain goes beyond transportation and animal trading.
However, the meat trade is subject to food-safety rules, animal-health requirements and animal-welfare regulations.
3: DONKEY HIDES HAVE COMMERCIAL VALUE.
Donkey hides have historically been used to produce a traditional gelatin product known as ejiao, particularly in China.
This has created international demand for donkey hides and contributed to concerns about the illegal and unsustainable slaughter of donkeys in some regions.
4: DONKEYS CAN SUPPORT SMALL-SCALE FARMING.
Beyond transportation, donkeys can be used for certain farm operations, including pulling simple agricultural equipment.
For smallholder farmers, they can provide useful farm power where tractors are unavailable or too expensive.
5: DONKEYS ARE IMPORTANT TO RURAL LIVELIHOODS.
For some households, a donkey is not just an animal.
It is a working asset that helps transport goods, reduce physical labour and support their daily economic activities.
Now, here is what fascinates me.
We often talk about agriculture as though it begins and ends with planting crops.
But look at the donkey.
There are businesses around breeding, trading, transportation, animal healthcare, feeding and other parts of its value chain.
This is why I keep saying that agriculture is bigger than farming.
The opportunities are everywhere.
You just need to study the market and understand the problems people are paying to solve.
Kano State is blessed.
