Tribal complaints did not start at the conference. They started long before the vote.
What you are seeing now is the outcome of earlier political decisions. Not exclusion. Consequences.
If you ignore that history, your analysis will be weak.
Complaints about the absence of Xitsonga speakers at the ANC provincial conference Top 5 executives are misplaced. This is not about tribe. It is about political choices and their consequences.
The roots go back to the ANC Norman Mashabane elective conference held from 09 to 11 May 2025 at Karibu Resort. At that conference, Tsonga branches united behind Goodman Mtileni to challenge the sitting executive mayor Pule Shai. The goal was clear. Install a Tsonga executive mayor for the first time.
That plan collapsed from within. Basikopo Makamu broke ranks. He backed Pule Shai and used his Giyani branches to shift the balance. This was not a small move. It split internal support and weakened the Tsonga bloc at a critical moment.
He then pushed for Sydwell Mabunda to become regional treasurer, removing Thandi Zitha. That decision created more enemies than allies. It looked strategic at the time. It was not.
After that conference, resentment grew. Those who lost did not move on. They waited. The idea that this would have no consequences was unrealistic.
Ahead of the provincial conference, Basikopo Makamu tried to rebuild support. He approached traditional leaders, veterans, and business figures. They refused. Their reason was consistent. They did not trust someone seen as having betrayed his own bloc.
That rejection created a vacuum. Other groups stepped in and consolidated power. They acted based on numbers and organisation, not sentiment.
Now the outcome is clear. Makamu stands isolated. Even his own Giyani branches have resolved to back Goodman Mtileni as their first additional member.
