Interesting stuffs you need to know about the Nigeria Sugar industry.

Incase you don't know, Sugar is made from sugarcane, Nigerians love sugar too much & that made us rely solely on sugar import.

In 2024 & 2025, local production ranged between 40,000 & 80,000 tonnes against national consumption of about 1.7 million tonnes. This means more than 95% of sugar consumed in Nigeria is imported.

That's not all o, only about 30% of sugar cane in Nigeria is processed industrially to make sugar cane and ethanol, the rest are eating as chewing cane (Ireke) - all you sugar cane lovers are eating our common wealth 😩

But something interesting has been happening in the sugar sector in the last few years. Nigeria’s harvested sugarcane area grew from roughly 75,000 hectares in 2020 to about 100,000 hectares by 2025. Over the same period, raw cane output rose sharply from about 1.53 million tonnes to an estimated 3.33 million tonnes.

Some states are really investing in the sugar cane sector
• Niger state committed close to 148,000 hectares for sugar development, with plans to host six factories by 2027. When completed, the facilities will produce up to 2.5 million tonnes of sugar and 250 million litres of ethanol each year.

• Kwara state, BUA Foods is close to completing its Lafiagi Sugar Company project. The factory is projected to become the largest integrated sugar facility in West Africa. It is designed to process 10,000 tonnes of cane daily and could add about 220,000 tonnes of refined sugar and 20 million litres of ethanol annually.

• Dangote is expanding its Numan refinery in Adamawa, while the 78,000 hectare Tunga Sugar Project in Nasarawa is receiving a large share of a 700 million dollar investment, Legacy Sugar has launched a new greenfield project in Adamawa with a target output of 100,000 tonnes per year.

• UMZA Sugar has committed around 100 million dollars to an integrated sugar and rice estate. Taraba State is witnessing progress on the GNAAL Sugar project promoted by the Lee Group as well as the Lau Tau project, which aims for a processing capacity of 250,000 tonnes.

• In the South West, Oyo State is hosting the Brent Sugar project, which is expected to contribute an additional 100,000 tonnes to domestic supply.

In short!
We are seeing serious investments in the sugar sector and more opportunities for industrial & economical growth.

Legitimate AgGrow Program Process:

a) Inputs are 100% financed by NADF and disbursed only through pre-qualified agro-processors.
b)Farmers are biometrically verified and farms geo-tagged via NADF’s secure digital M&E platform.
c))No direct farmer repayments: Agro-processors settle 50% of costs post-harvest.
