I'd argue it's mainly due to monetary debasement and somewhat bad/over regulation, which all drive inequality and billionaire wealth.

Since the 1980s, the Sahara has shrunk by roughly 8%. Satellite data show widespread greening, a pattern that is playing out across the planet.

Around 50% of Earth's vegetated land has become significantly greener, an area roughly three times the size of the United States.

The dominant driver is not rainfall or land use change, it is rising atmospheric CO2.

Higher CO2 lets plants photosynthesize more efficiently, they lose less water, they tolerate heat and dryness better.

The effect is strongest along desert margins, across the Sahel, the Middle East, Australia's interior and the southern edge of the Sahara.

Rising CO2 is making the deserts, and the planet as a whole, greener.

Nothing stops a group of socialists pooling their money, forming a company, and splitting every wage and every pound of profit perfectly equally.... Or to donate all profit to the government.

It’s legal. It’s easy. Owning the means of production is as simple as setting up a company.

Marx wrote his manifesto before the invention of limited liability companies. Back then “seize the factory” meant seizing it from the handful of families who could afford one.

That argument expired the day anyone could start a company with limited liability, raise investment and hire who they want.

Socialists are free to lead by example and demonstrate their system works. They can out-recruit, out-motivate, out-build and out innovate based on their ideas if they like. It would prove the philosophy works. Capitalism will happily host their experiment.

The fact that nobody does this tells you a lot.

Prenons Jancovici. L'homme est brillant, sincère, travailleur. Il ne se lève pas le matin en se disant qu'il va nuire à l'humanité. Mais l'idée qu'il porte la décroissance, le rationnement, la frugalité érigée en horizon civilisationnel est une idée profondément destructrice. Elle prend des esprits brillants et les transforme en commissaires politiques d'un futur appauvri.

Et le plus fascinant, c'est ce que cette idée fait aux gens qui l'adoptent.

Dans mon entourage, une grosse partie de mes amis est sur cette ligne décroissantiste, avec tout le package qui va avec. L'argent c'est mal mais ils en veulent. Il faut moins prendre l'avion mais ils rêvent de voyager partout. Il faut consommer moins mais ils ne renoncent à rien de ce qu'ils aiment vraiment.

Et tous ont un point commun : ils sont déprimés. L'un d'eux m'a même confié qu'il était sous antidépresseurs.

Ce n'est pas un hasard. C'est mécanique.

Quand tu crois que ton désir de vivre, de créer, de t'élever est moralement suspect tu te détruis de l'intérieur. Tu passes ta vie à t'excuser d'exister. Tu vis dans la dissonance permanente entre ce que ton corps veut (plus, mieux, plus loin) et ce que ton idéologie t'ordonne (moins, sobre, immobile).

D'où ma théorie :

Quand on pense quelque chose de fondamentalement faux décroissance, communisme, extrémisme religieux (de tout ordre) ce n'est qu'une question de temps avant que ça devienne vraiment destructeur.

D'abord pour soi. Puis pour les autres.

Les mauvaises idées tuent. Lentement chez ceux qui y croient, brutalement chez ceux qui les subissent.

C'est pour ça que la bataille des idées n'est pas un luxe d'intellectuel. C'est la bataille la plus importante de notre époque.

In 1940, John Wheeler called Richard Feynman and suggested that the reason every electron has exactly the same mass and charge, to a precision we cannot even measure a deviation from, is that there is only one of them.

A single electron, weaving forwards and backwards through time, threading through every moment of cosmic history, appearing as matter when it moves one way and as its antiparticle when it moves the other.

The idea was never proven, but it was never quite killed either. The math allows it.

An electron going backwards in time is mathematically identical to a positron going forwards, and the equations do not care which description you pick.

If Wheeler was right, then the particle in your retina reading this sentence is the same particle burning in the heart of a star ten billion light years away.

My totally outrageous and not at all serious 10 point plan to save Britain.

1) The entire Labour government does the honourable thing and resigns on the basis that remaining in office merely guarantees it will preside over the eventual loss of economic control.

2) Officially acknowledges that, without IMF backing and access to dollar liquidity, Britain’s current economic model is structurally unsustainable — particularly for a country whose comparative advantage is supposedly financial credibility.

3) Establishes a government of national unity in which day-to-day economic management is handed to industry-backed technocrats and entrepreneurs under a four-year “rebuild or bust” mandate.

4) Pegs sterling to the dollar in order to restore monetary credibility and halt the slow transformation of Britain into an upper-middle-income crisis economy. [Alternatively removes all barriers to USD stablecoins and allows explicit dollarisation that way.]

5) Slashes corporate taxes, accelerates planning reform, and dismantles layers of administrative and regulatory drag in an emergency bid to revive productivity and private investment.

6) Restricts full NHS eligibility to citizens and settled residents, with everyone else moved onto a contributory or fee-based system outside emergency treatment.

7) Realigns British industrial, defence and trade policy explicitly around American strategic priorities in exchange for preferential access to US capital, markets and dollar funding.

8) Offers Washington broad regulatory and geopolitical alignment — including on technology, energy and security policy — in return for expedited customs access and a de facto economic stabilisation umbrella.

9) Reopens the North Sea at full scale, removes remaining extraction constraints, and adopts the official position that “drill, baby, drill” is now a matter of national solvency.

10) Cancels the Diego Garcia deal immediately on the grounds that no country negotiating for IMF support should be voluntarily reducing its strategic collateral.

The other option is all of the above but joins the eurosystem or China instead.
