I received a Steam key of Sengoku Rance from @KaguraGames, so I decided to try the unpatched all-ages version to see how it compares to the original.
Not going to lie, I'm actually quite impressed by the amount of effort that went into making a PG-13 Rance. Admittedly, I expected them to take the easy way out and omit most of the story content while only keeping the RPG gameplay. Instead, it was clear that they worked hard on maintaining a complete story by keeping as much of the content the same as possible while reworking scenes to make them more wholesome.
Rance is now a man whose goal is to conquer many women by smooching them and seems to like massaging their shoulders as well. While a lot of the H scenes have been omitted, I was surprised to see some turning into kissing competitions instead.
Truly the wholesome, cute, adventure RPG that was foretold long ago! Of course, there is a free patch that restores the original content, but I can see this all-ages version useful for those that want to stream the game. (And maybe even perhaps a way to get Rance on consoles.) While a "streamer-friendly" version already exists, it keeps most of the NSFW text which may come with a risk of getting flagged by the streaming platform.
It definitely must have been a Herculean task to edit such a long visual novel into an all-ages game while keeping a coherent story, and having it approved by Steam no less. I applaud everyone involved with the project and it'll be interesting to see how the other Rance games will shape up. Again, I will reiterate that there is a free content restoration patch so you are not stuck with a kiss-obsessed Rance!
