The Cat C175-20. Twenty cylinders, one block, 4,000 horsepower.
The name comes from the bore, 175 millimeters. That’s almost 7 inches across each cylinder. Total displacement is 106 liters, or about 6,469 cubic inches. Thats about the size of seven C15s, haha.
Electronically controlled with 4 turbochargers and air-to-air aftercooling.
It’s the engine in Cat’s 797F mining truck. 400 tons of payload, 1.375 million pounds loaded, and six tires that weigh over 11,000 pounds each.
Here’s the cool part. The old 797 ran a V24, basically two V12s hooked together. The C175 replaced it with 20 cylinders in one solid block and made 450 more horsepower doing it.
And it does all that at 1,750 rpm. Barely breaking a sweat.
They don’t even drive these trucks to the mine. They ship them in pieces on semis, and a crew spends about 20 days putting one together on site.
More Fun Facts: The 797F carries 1,000 gallons of fuel, and the engine holds 110 gallons of oil.
