Thoughts on the @Cisco patent filing integrating @holochain - as a long-time follower, an active Holo host, and a formerly certified (3x) Cisco associate.

Although my certification was in corporate network structure and security, not mobile networks, this patent news caught my eye. My initial insight was that the filing uses the pattern language of hREA applied to a new form of distributed data storage.

Here, Cisco is specifically looking at data sharing within mobile telecommunications infrastructure (5G), which they term "fog computing" - I interpret it as a fairly novel adaptation of the common "cloud computing."

Some basics on the patent filing:

This patent - introducing fog computing - describes techniques to allow different entities in a 5G network, like service providers and software companies, to securely share information with each other using Holochain technology.

What information are they sharing? Let's look at how the patent applies to Network Slicing in telecommunications.

Network Slicing 101
Imagine a 5G network as a multi-lane highway. Just as different lanes can be designated for different types of vehicles (like cars, buses, or bikes), in a 5G network, "network slicing" allows the creation of multiple virtual networks (or 'slices') over the same physical network infrastructure. Each slice can be tailored to meet specific requirements of different applications or services. For example, one slice could be optimized for high-speed data for streaming videos, while another could be configured for low-latency communication needed in autonomous vehicles.

Resource Orchestration Using Holochain
Think of "resource orchestration" as the traffic management system for this highway. It ensures that each vehicle (or data packet) is on the right lane (or network slice) and that traffic flows smoothly without congestion. In the context of this patent, Holochain acts like a highly advanced and decentralized traffic management system. It uses blockchain-like technology to securely and efficiently manage how these network slices are allocated and used.

STEP 1 - When a service (like a streaming service or an IoT device) needs a specific type of network slice, it sends a request (a Holochain transaction) specifying its needs.
STEP 2 - This request is received by the 5G network provider, who reviews it and, if agreed, co-signs the transaction.
STEP 3 - This mutual agreement is then recorded in a secure and transparent manner, thanks to Holochain's technology.
STEP 4 - Finally, the agreed-upon network slice is allocated to the service, ensuring it gets the network resources it needs.

In this example, Holochain allows distributed sharing of network information between entities without needing a centralized database.

Cisco Patent and hREA Pattern Language

1. The entities conducting transactions using "fog computing" could be seen as economic agents, similar to hREA's agents that track resource flows.
2. The network slice information being captured in transactions mirrors how hREA tracks information flows between agents.
3. Capturing provenance and history of usage data is analogous to hREA's principles of provenance tracking.

To better understand the patent, it's important to consider the hREA framework and why it's unique in the Holochain ecosystem.

Article TL;DR

The examples provided here are in food and textile networks, but the framework can essentially be applied to any sector or industry. This tech could enable organizations to integrate data exchange mechanisms for better supply chain coordination - between suppliers of a resource and buyers of resources.

As a host, the hREA language is one of the more intriguing applications I’ve seen emerge in the 5 years I’ve been following the project.

While it’ll still be a while before hREA might be leveraged in more “mainstream” commercial tools, the Cisco patent is somewhat encouraging.
