The definition of a second isn't as straightforward as you might think. In fact, it has changed over the course of history as scientists have found more precise ways to measure time.

Originally, a second was defined based on the rotation of the Earth. But the problem was that the length of a day varies slightly over time.

So mechanical clocks and later quartz clocks, which keep very consistent time through oscillations, became the basis for the second.

Then in 1967 scientists went even further and redefined the second based on atomic oscillations - 9 billion 192 million 631 thousand 770 oscillations of a cesium atom to be exact!

Cesium atomic clocks are so precise that they won't lose even a second in millions of years. But atomic clock technology keeps advancing. Today's experimental optical atomic clocks are even more precise, keeping time to within one second over the age of the universe!

So in the coming years, we may see the definition of the second change yet again to keep pace with our ever-more accurate timekeeping.
