🚨 France: protests spiral out of control 🇫🇷

Marseille today:
• Protesters briefly stormed City Hall
• Municipal police station attacked: windows smashed, smoke bombs thrown inside
• Shops looted near the Canebière
• Riot police fired tear gas at the Prado and Saint-Charles station

Clashes were also reported in Paris and Lyon. Paris police used tear gas and water cannons.

The protests are against the rising cost of living. Paris is sending 2 extra riot police companies to Marseille.

🇳🇱 BREAKING: The Netherlands scraps asylum penalty payments

What are they?
When the IND (immigration service) takes too long to decide on an asylum claim, the applicant can go to court. A judge can then order the state to pay a penalty for every day of delay.

The numbers 📊
• €112M paid out in penalties this year alone
• 200+ penalty claims filed per working day
• Every claim pulls IND staff into court to explain the delay, leaving even less time to decide cases

What changes?
• Senate approved the bill on Oct 13
• No more penalty payments for late asylum decisions
• Minister Van den Brink (CDA) wants it in force within a week

Why?
The minister says the backlog is "completely out of hand" and the penalties had a "destructive effect."
The IND director: the penalties brought "extra workload and high costs" but didn't speed anything up.

Background
The measure was part of a stricter asylum law from former PVV minister Faber, which the Senate rejected earlier this year after the PVV pulled its support. Van den Brink is now passing parts of it one by one.
