Is O+ive Really the Universal Blood Type?

The answer is : No

Real Fact: O-ive (O negative) is the universal red-cell donor in emergency transfusion settings.

Why the difference?

O-ive red blood cells lack A, B and RhD antigens, so they can generally be given to patients of all 8 major ABO/Rh blood groups when type-specific blood isn’t available.

O+ive can donate red blood cells to: O+, A+, B+ and AB+ essentially, Rh-positive recipients.

ONE IMPORTANT POINT:
“Universal donor” refers specifically to red blood cells, not whole blood or plasma. Also, hospitals still prefer type-specific, crossmatched blood whenever possible.

CONCLUSION :
O-ive = universal red-cell donor
AB+ive = universal red-cell recipient
