IGAD CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE DE-ESCALATION IN NORTHERN ETHIOPIA

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is gravely concerned by the escalation of tensions in northern Ethiopia, including reports of renewed hostilities, the seizure of civilian airports and the disruption of air services.

IGAD calls on the parties to cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action that could further imperil civilian lives or undermine the peace process.

Today in Ali-Sabieh and Ali-Addeh, in (Republic of Djibouti)we continued our work to bring IGAD closer to the people it serves.
With the support of the Government of Djibouti and funding from the Government of Germany, we inaugurated new community markets and a fully equipped technical institute—investments that will enable women traders to grow their enterprises and equip young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

For more than 6,000 refugees and members of host communities, these investments go beyond infrastructure. They expand opportunity, strengthen livelihoods and restore hope.
Grateful to the Government and people of Germany for funding these transformative investments.

IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. @DrWorkneh is in Ali-Sabieh and Ali-Addeh, Djibouti, to inaugurate and hand over transformative infrastructure developed under the Regional Migration Fund.

Together with Djibouti’s Minister of Decentralisation and funding partners from the German Government and KfW, the Executive Secretary is unveiling a EUR 10 million investment that will expand economic opportunities, strengthen skills development and improve essential services for more than 6,000 refugees and members of host communities.

This is regional cooperation delivering tangible impact where it matters most—in people’s lives.

Honoured to join High Ethiopian government officials,health ministers, policymakers, healthcare leaders, investors and innovators at the 13th East Africa Healthcare Federation Conference and International Exhibition in Addis Ababa.
Today’s gathering reinforces a simple truth; health sovereignty underpins national sovereignty, economic resilience and shared prosperity. East Africa has the talent, innovation and ambition to build resilient health systems, create jobs, attract investment and strengthen local manufacturing.

Ethiopia and Kenya strengthen coordination of cross-border frameworks

IGAD's CEWARN convened Kenya–Ethiopia High-Level Experts to review the existing bilateral agreements and other cooperation mechanisms. The two-day Consultative Meeting concluded with practical recommendations and agreed follow-up actions to strengthen cross-border coordination, information-sharing and joint conflict prevention in the Moyale–Moyale and South Omo–Turkana corridors.

Convened by CEWARN with support from #EU and #FAO PLACE project, the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both Member States to enhance the implementation of existing bilateral and regional frameworks in support of #peace, #security and #stability in the border areas.

I am deeply humbled by the establishment of the "Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu Scholarship Program in Forensic Science" at the Ethiopian Police University.
My profound gratitude to the Ethiopian Federal Police for this honour. Forensic science is the quiet backbone of justice, and this initiative invests in the young generation of the IGAD region who will carry that work forward long after us. I accept this gesture with humility, and with renewed commitment to the service of our region.

The most effective response to displacement is not greater humanitarian assistance at the destination, but greater investment at the source.
At the Hamburg Call to Action on Internal Displacement side event, organised by UNDP, I called for strategic investments that address the drivers of displacement before people are forced to leave their homes.
At IGAD, we believe that building stable, prosperous, and sustainable communities begins with investing in peace, empowering youth and women, and creating opportunities where displacement originates.
