A Tribute to John Smith

It is with genuine sadness to learn the news of the passing of John Smith earlier today. John was a friend, my election agent and an unwavering pillar of our community here in Bury.

John was a man of deep commitment to public service, steadfast in his belief that politics has the power to transform lives for the better.

John’s legacy is found in all the stories of others stepping forward to get involved. He was a man of keen wit, of smart political insight and determination.

Our belief in politics came with disagreements of course. They came as standard with John, as they do with me. But he was always ready to enjoy a glass of good Red together, as quickly as I am. Our last wine together very recently at your home, will forever be fondly remembered.

John’s heart was rooted in his Catholic faith as well as truly progressive ideas. He was open minded and proudly so.

As my election agent in 2015 and 2017, we shared the highs and lows of political life—learning together what it meant to lose and to win. John would often see beyond the moment or immediate result and focus on the next challenge we’d face.

John’s love of Newcastle United was as strong as his commitment to Labour values, and his faith provided him with a quiet strength that was evident in everything he did. He was not only a dedicated public servant but also a devoted husband to Stella, with whom he shared a remarkable partnership, and a loving father to their four children. I send my deepest and heartfelt sympathies from me and my family.

The flag on the town hall at half-mast today is a mark of respect for a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure.

Rest in peace, John. You will be deeply missed, but your memory as a giant with shoulders on which we all still stand is real. And inspires us the more. XX 🌹 🌹

I’m so devastated to hear this.

I knew John since I was 16. It was John who encouraged me to stand for my first election (Bury Council - Church ward in 2000).

He was the very best of true Labour & a dedicated Cllr for years. My deepest, heartfelt condolences to all his family.
