Eight years ago today, Malaysians queued up at schools just like these.

Most of us didn’t actually think it would happen. We hoped. We showed up.

But deep down, many of us weren’t sure a single vote could change 61 years of the same government.

And then it did.

We did it.

Six years on, it’s hard to know how to feel about all of it.

A government that fell in 22 months.

Three prime ministers without a single election.

Another vote that gave us a unity government that, honestly, still doesn’t feel like what people queued up for back in 2018.

Reforms that were promised are either half-done or quietly forgotten. The feeling of “different faces, but a lot of the same feelings”.

I’ve had this conversation so many times now, with friends, with family, and I keep hearing the same thing.

“I’ve given up. The government disappoints me. The opposition isn’t any better.”

I don’t think that’s apathy. I think that’s what exhaustion sounds like after years of hoping.

But here’s the thing about political cycles.

They end.

And when they do, people who said they’ve given up somehow find themselves back at the polling station.

Pen in hand, doing the one thing that actually changed something once before.

We’re getting close to that moment again.

And if 2018 taught us anything, it’s that we’re more capable of surprising ourselves than we think.

Who Will Stand Up for Malaysia Against Corruption If Tuanku Muhriz is Removed?

On 14 January, Tuanku Muhriz described corruption as the foremost enemy of justice, trust and the nation’s future. He said he was shocked that some still rallied behind individuals found guilty of serious corruption offences, as if such acts were acceptable or forgivable, and urged them to reflect on their faith, principles and values, stressing that tolerance for corruption was unacceptable in a nation governed by the rule of law.

Three months later, an attempt was made to remove him.

The question we should be asking is:

(1) Who gains if he is gone?

(2) Who else will be willing to say the same things, from the same position, with the same clarity?

Menarik kenyataan media Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan. Dapat belajar benda baharu.

Dalam Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri Sembilan, kalau nak turunkan Yamtuan melalui 2 cara:

1) Berhenti sendiri
2) Dipaksa Berhenti

Keadaan apa yang dia boleh dipaksa berhenti?

Kalau dia ada salah satu ciri ni:

1) Uzur yang amat parah seperti gila, bisu, atau buta

2) Mempunyai sifat yang hina

3) Melakukan perbuatan yang keji

4) Dengan sengaja mengendahkan Perlembagaan

Hanya selepas dibuat salah satu dan dipanggil Yamtuan, keempat-empat Dato Undang DAN MENTERI BESAR perlu tanda tangan proklamasi memecat Yamtuan.

Dalam kes kali ini, nampaknya memang Dato Dato Undang yang tak ikut Undang Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri iaitu:

1) Gagal buktikan Yamtuan Besar ada salah satu daripada 4 ciri-ciri tadi

It was business as usual for Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, as he officiated the first state legislative assembly meeting of the year.

In his speech, the ruler, who is under pressure from the state's four ruling chieftains to resign, also lectured those with positions as well as netizens about their responsibilities.

"Before I end my speech, I wish to raise a matter that is important to Negeri Sembilan, aimed especially at individuals who have been given positions and rank which comes with great responsibilities.

Bekas hakim Mahkamah Rayuan Mohd Hishamudin Yunus berpendapat bahawa pengisytiharan bagi memecat Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir sebagai tidak sah.

Cicit kepada bekas undang Johol Wan Saeto Rubah pada abad ke-19 itu membangkitkan sama ada para undang menjalankan siasatan penuh dan lengkap terhadap dakwaan salah laku Tuanku Muhriz, seperti didakwa.

“Atas andaian bahawa tiada proses sewajarnya dijalankan dalam tuntutan penurunan takhta itu, maka pengisytiharan yang didakwa dikeluarkan oleh tiga undang dan Mubarak (Thahak) adalah tidak sah,” katanya dalam artikel disiarkan The Edge.

A former Court of Appeal judge and a senior lawyer have questioned whether the Negeri Sembilan chieftains had followed due process before they moved to oust Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as state ruler.

The concerns stem from the wording of Article 10 of the Negeri Sembilan constitution - the law which allows the Undang Yang Empat to remove the ruler.

Specifically, Article 10 states there must be a full and complete inquiry before the undangs can make a decision to dethrone the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

Sometimes I think my brother is our own kind of Forrest Gump. He was born breech, his delivery was sort of delayed and that caused him developmental problems. Slow learner they said. Stuttering badly. Always lost in his own world. Got bullied physically and mentally at school despite our father was a teacher at the school.

On his 10th attempt of repeating SPM, he told mum it could be his last attempt. On multiple occasions, he cried.

That led him to another two attempt of STPM. Led him to successfully graduated with a degree. Then another with DPLI. Meanwhile, he did oddjobs; being a guard at the hospital, schools, old folks home and helping our father at the paddy field.

On the day of his interview, he was asked about his OKU card at the end of the session. He admitted having it for being a slow learner; OKU pembelajaran. The moment he stepped out of the interview room, he went to our mother, and cried, probably out of relief, or from feeling like he was near the end of his long fight. And today is the day he is officially a teacher at a school. And he’s starting his life fresh and anew, at the age of 37.

He is still him, the older brother I’ve known since we were small. Still being as he is, just like how Forrest Gump was at the end of the movie. Still him, but he created history through perseverance and grit, straight from his own life.

It’s true that he received great support from our mother, father and all of us siblings. But one fact in life is that you can’t help a person if the person doesn’t want to be helped, even if the whole world lends a hand. But in this case, he helped himself, hence he got helped.

All the best to this new chapter, this new endeavour at the new place. We will always be there for him, through and through, as long as he is through and through with himself, as he always has been.
