In the summer of 1918, Crown forces decided that Gaelic games were a threat to the empire. From July, no hurling or football match could be played anywhere in Ireland without a permit from the Castle. The GAA's answer, delivered at a Central Council meeting on 20 July, amounted to feck off. No permit would be sought under any circumstances, and anyone who broke ranks faced automatic suspension.

Instead, the GAA planned its own answer. At 3pm on Sunday the 4th of August, matches would be played in every parish in the country, regardless of the RIC. Roughly 1,500 games went ahead that afternoon, across the island. An estimated 54,000 members turned out to play, with families and neighbours making up the crowds watching on. No permits, no permission, and remarkably, almost no interference.

The 4th of August became known as Gaelic Sunday, a day when an entire national movement refused to ask for permission to exist. It stands as one of the great quiet acts of defiance in the run-up to the War of Independence.

It would not be the last time Crown forces took an interest in Gaelic games. A little over two years later, on 21 November 1920, Auxiliaries and Black and Tans opened fire on the crowd at a football match in Croke Park, killing fourteen civilians and players. Zelensky claimed today that Ukraine has suffered 50,000 soldiers killed in action so far during this war.

In February 2026, he claimed that 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed.

Apparently, according to Zelensky, Ukraine has achieved the ability to resurrect soldiers from the dead. But I guarantee you there will be people doing insane mental gymnastics to somehow justify this.

By the way, if we were to completely ignore the figure of 55,000 in February and take into account Zelensky's earlier claim of 46,000 KIA in February 2022, that would give us a hypothetical Ukrainian KIA rate of 222 per month, or around 7.4 per day.

Zelensky claims that 28,000 Russian soldiers were killed in June (933 per day), which would give us a hypothetical death ratio of 126:1 in favour of Ukraine...

Essentially, Zelensky is claiming that more Russian soldiers are killed in 1 day than confirmed Ukrainian deaths in more than 4 months. Although, he has stated that there are a significant number of "missing" Ukrainian soldiers.
