Through this partnership, Villa College will manage and administer a national research grant, supporting our academics and scholars in conducting impactful research that contributes to national growth and development.
This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time a national research grant is being formally introduced in the Maldives.

IMERC 2025 has officially begun!
Today marks the start of the International Medical Education and Research Conference IMERC Maldives 2025, a landmark collaboration between the @MayoClinic , @treetophospital, @igmhmv .
IMERC is a first-of-its-kind international medical conference in the Maldives, bringing together world-renowned experts from the Mayo Clinic alongside local and regional healthcare professionals.
We officially kicked off today with our Pre-Conference Workshops, featuring engaging, hands-on sessions in Dive Medicine, Ultrasound (POCUS), CPR, Research Methodology, and Physical Examination Training. Each workshop is designed to equip participants with vital clinical and emergency care skills, guided by leading international and local experts.
This conference marks the beginning of a transformative partnership, empowering local professionals, enhancing patient care, and advancing medical education in the Maldives and beyond.

Dive Medicine Workshop at IMERC Maldives 2025!
The workshop began with an insightful dive into the fascinating world of Dive Medicine, as Dr. Pradeep welcomed participants with an overview of the field, setting the stage for a day full of learning and practical knowledge.
Participants then explored Decompression Sickness (DCS) and Gas Embolism, expertly explained by Dr. Jay Adusumalli, who shared critical insights into recognizing and managing these life-threatening dive conditions.
Research Bootcamp at IMERC Maldives 2025!
The day began with Research Ethics and Regulations, led by Dr. Ivana Croghan, covering foundational principles, historical milestones shaping modern protections, regulatory frameworks, and ongoing ethical challenges in human research.
Participants then explored Research Design in Action, diving into observational, analytical, and experimental study methods, including adaptive and modern approaches to designing high-impact research.
Physical Examination Workshop at IMERC Maldives 2025.
The workshop began with a warm welcome and briefing by Jessica Richardson from Mayo Clinic, alongside the Villa College team, including Dr. Afsar Shaik and Karthiga Ragupathy. Participants then rotated through hands-on morning sessions, learning essential clinical skills: Neurology Exam with Dr. Bower, Musculoskeletal Exam with Dr. Laskowski, and Suturing & Vital Signs with Dr. McLeod.
These sessions provided foundational skills for accurate patient assessment and practical clinical training.
CPR Training at IMERC Maldives 2025.
The workshop began with a warm welcome and briefing by Dr. Jonathan Schwartz from Mayo Clinic, alongside Dr. Mano Priya Vijayan and Dr. Arockiamary I. from Villa College. Participants were introduced to the objectives of CPR training and the importance of emergency response in saving lives.
The first session covered CPR Fundamentals, including the chain of survival, recognizing cardiac arrest, and ensuring scene safety – essential knowledge for any healthcare professional or responder.
Point-of-Care Ultrasound Workshop IMERC Maldives 2025.
As part of the pre-conference workshops, the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) session began with opening remarks by Dr. Kanchan Dhungel Adhikari, Consultant Radiologist and Head of Radiology. Dr. Eric Leveille, M.D., M.P.H., then delivered an engaging lecture on the essential principles and applications of bedside ultrasound.
The workshop concluded with hands-on training, where participants practiced real-time imaging techniques under expert guidance from @MayoClinic , enhancing their skills in patient assessment and clinical decision-making.

In the second half of the workshop, Dr. Jay Adusumalli guided participants through Immersion Pulmonary Edema (IPE) and other common dive injuries, highlighting symptoms, risks, and preventative measures. Attendees also learned clinical assessment techniques for divers with suspected dive-related illnesses, equipping them with the skills to evaluate and manage emergencies safely.
The day continued with first aid and emergency response training for diving accidents, followed by an in-depth session on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – a critical treatment in dive medicine.
The workshop concluded with an interactive Q&A and closing remarks from Dr. Pradeep, leaving participants with enhanced knowledge and practical skills to handle dive emergencies with confidence.
