Annual tower maintenance, underway 🚧

Standing at 87m, Heathrow’s control tower is engineered to allow the cab to descend once a year for cleaning and inspection, a process built into the original design to minimise disruption to operations.

The system uses a precision motorised vertical drive, with guided rails and stabilised cabling to ensure a smooth, controlled movement throughout the descent, even in variable weather conditions. By bringing the cab down to ground level, teams can carry out detailed cleaning, structural checks, and visibility assessments without the need for external access systems or temporary works.

Air traffic controllers remain fully operational during the process, so from their perspective it’s business as usual, just with a slightly more down to earth view than usual.
