Crafting a convincing fantasy setting, how important is it?
“Setting is a pretty all-encompassing element of your manuscript. It is difficult to talk about any one element in isolation.”

This year is shaping up to be my best yet!
Of my 19 projects, 15 were wonderful fantasy manuscripts. 🔮
We won’t talk about metres knit. Among those projects is a jumper languishing until I buy more yarn.
I should probably admit that the Tough Mudder was only 5k!😊

”Something this book does brilliantly is establish strong motivations and goals for the character’s and is reactive to what might change those goals, and linking those goals to the overarching story.”

What writer do you think has the best voice? Finding your own narrative voice can be really tricky. There is a fine line between “inspired by” and “derivative of”. For a lot of us, a narrative voice is already hidden in our words.

“I read that book at the right time.”
Not every book can speak exactly what you need to hear at the exact moment you need to hear it. But isn’t it transportive when the stars align!
What books have been exactly right for the you of the moment?

@CormacsThoughts Your opinion is definitely relevant! I mostly work on fantasy which is probably for the best because looking up the cloud cover on a particular day to tell an author that the castle wouldn't be visible from sea level would be far too much power.
How much fact checking do you expect from your copyeditor? I am a Google Street View and a “I just checked your description against this folklore and I think dragons should have a bone here” type editor. But I recognise that there is a sliding scale on this!

Should I have read a near-future climate dystopia when I’m living in a present day climate dystopia? Perhaps not!
But here is my take as a developmental editor of Venomous Lumpsuckers by Ned Beauman: https://t.co/1ABu7BJ67U

”Read more than just one source of information. It’s so important that you don’t look at just one person’s experience or one organisation’s resources.”

The Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell is non-fiction, but what can fantasy authors learn from it?
Spoiler: This book might have the most literal book title I have ever come across.

Authenticity readers are a crucial part of the writing process. When exploring the world around us through our words, it is important to write compassionately and accurately.
What can they do for your manuscript? H tells us here: https://t.co/zlPjdCzJei

I finally got a chance to breathe this month! I’ve been on a non-stop rollercoaster of incredible editing projects this year. As much as I have enjoyed each project, it has been nice to take a step back and think ahead.

I love subverting genre. But to do it well, you have to know what you are subverting. Read my blog on how to please your fantasy readers.

Are you in a writing group? I am often worried that bringing a story into the light before it is fully cemented with cause it to disintegrate. But talking about bookish things with bookish people is just too fun.
