Hilo.
I had less than zero interest in this show when it was announced. I gave it a shot because I dug what Lindelof did with Watchmen. I love comics, but was always more of a Marvel guy.
Since the show dropped I've read 4 Green Lantern trade paperbacks and watched hours of YouTube lore drops about these weirdo space cops.
I'm now of the belief that Green Lantern is the most comic booky comic book property and I say that in the best possible way.
Turning Hal Jordan into a grizzled, battle worn veteran saves him from the bland golden boy persona that weakened previous adaptations, replacing generic cosmic bravado with the dry, reckless edge of an old school test pilot who has witnessed too much to be easily shaken. Making him an aging institution reluctantly tasked with mentoring John Stewart creates a compelling contrast: Hal treats the universe’s most powerful weapon almost like a battered pocketknife, while quietly growing irritated as his rookie partner consistently out thinks him and constructs with greater architectural precision.
Most importantly, his fearlessness is no longer presented as flawless invulnerability. Instead, it feels like the scar tissue left by years of surviving horrors, coupled with the uncomfortable realization that the cosmos may be preparing to leave him behind. That gives the DCU’s Hal Jordan the human tension, vulnerability, and emotional weight that previous live-action versions struggled to capture.
Marina Purkiss, "188 articles on this man, Jason Arday, who was not a public figure, over 9 days"
"It was a blood sport for The Telegraph, The Times, The Spectator"
"They have blood on their hands for this man"
"They just thought clickbait was more important"
"The Times even had articles on Jason Arday, that was paid for advertising"
"And I just want to call out Julia Hartley-Brewer, you disgusting vile woman in my opinion for what you posted on social media yesterday"
"She wrote: I'm pretty sure Jason Arday's huge book advance would be enough to cover his funeral costs. Give your money to a more deserving cause"
"What is wrong with you? What is wrong with you"
You Jayme Lawson fans are delusional. Y'all think the internet gets to cast every superhero movie now. This pick (IF TRUE) feels like the work of Ryan Coogler, the guy who discovered Miles Caton, and who I told you would be involved in the search for Storm. Do you really think you'll recognize every actor cast in X-MEN?
A 22-year-old student teacher in Illinois sent a private Snapchat message to her boyfriend and two roommates.
A student had walked up to her laptop and deleted her lesson plan mid-class. frustrated, she typed something like "should I shoot him" with a gun emoji. venting. four people. private group chat.
An hour later, police walked into her school and arrested her.
here's what happened in between.
Snapchat's AI scanned the private message. flagged it as a potential threat. automatically reported it to the FBI. the FBI forwarded it to local law enforcement. deputies arrived at the school within the hour.
she cooperated immediately. handed over her phone. when shown the message she said: "oh yes. okay. yeah. i'm realizing that was a bad joke. i did not mean it at all serious at all."
police determined she was not a threat. school officials determined she was not a threat. prosecutors reviewed and issued a disorderly conduct charge. she was released the next morning. she lost her student teaching placement.
This means:
Snapchat scans private messages.
Not just public posts or stories. private group chats between you and your closest contacts. automated AI. no human reviewed it first, got flagged and reported.
Snapchat AI → FBI → local police → school → arrest.
in under an hour.
Snapchat's privacy policy says it may share your information with law enforcement when it believes there is a risk of harm. the definition of "risk of harm" is determined by an algorithm.
you are not told when a message is flagged.
you are not told when a report is filed.
you find out when the police arrive.
the message was private.
it wasn't.
Marvel casting director Sarah Finn says David Jonsson was chosen as the next Black Panther because he has a lot of talent & a lot of heart.
“We needed someone not only with the talent but a certain presence and a certain spirit.”
