The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) on Wednesday criticized the officiating in Egypt’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup round of 16, accusing referees of improperly using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

In a statement posted on social media, the EFA said several refereeing decisions had a direct impact on the match.

“Several key incidents raised serious concerns and left profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly influenced the course of the game,” the federation said.

The EFA added that “A number of football experts and specialist analysts, both locally and internationally, have highlighted controversial and influential refereeing incidents during the match.”

“This underlines the importance of maintaining the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency in match officiating, particularly in a competition of the stature and significance of the FIFA World Cup 2026.”

Egypt looked set to pull off one of the tournament’s biggest shocks after taking a 2-0 lead over defending champions Argentina with 11 minutes remaining on Tuesday, before conceding three late goals.

Media reports said EFA President Hany Abo Rida has filed an official complaint against French referee Francois Letexier and his officiating team.

There's no more truce. Trump, in between two working sessions of the NATO summit in Ankara, stated:

"The ceasefire with Iran is over. I want nothing to do with these sick bastards. The Iranian leadership are liars, cheats and lunatics. We made a deal. Everyone agreed. No nuclear weapons. And they go out in public, talk to the press, and say we never even discussed it."

This, if you recall, is the same president who personally vouched for the Islamabad memorandum two weeks ago - 14 points, a 60-day window, Iran's final renunciation of its military nuclear program, and the lifting of oil sanctions in exchange. A memorandum that was personally backed by Whitcof and Kushner.

How it went at night
First move - Iranian. On Tuesday, three commercial ships are hit one after the other in the Strait of Hormuz: the Qatari gas tanker Al Rekayyat (the engine room caught fire), the Saudi supertanker Wedyan off the coast of Oman, and the Liberian-flagged dry cargo ship Cyprus Prosperity. Tehran denies responsibility. Qatar - directly accuses Iran.

Second move - American. Trump gives the order directly from the NATO summit. By evening, an air bridge is already in place over the Persian Gulf: at least 12 US Air Force refueling aircraft, a P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance plane. The first wave - on Kharg Island: six explosions. The second - Sirik, seven explosions. The third - Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, Mahshahr in Khuzestan province. In the morning, Iranian sources confirm: the strikes reached Kharg - the very place from which ninety percent of Iran's oil exports come.

By 6 am Tehran time, CENTCOM sums up: 80+ targets. Air defense systems, coastal surveillance, anti-aircraft guns, anti-ship missiles, drone launch pads, ports. Plus - 60 IRGC speedboats in the strait itself. According to an American official from Axios, the strikes are four to five times more powerful than those in June.

Third move - Iranian. On the morning of July 8, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launches a joint missile-drone strike on 85 US targets. Salman Port in Bahrain - the base of the US Fifth Fleet. Al Asalam Air Base in Kuwait - where American fighter jets are based. Sirens in Kuwait. Kuwaiti air defense reports successful interceptions - but admits that "the strikes are heard throughout the country". The Iranians report the downing of an MQ-9 Reaper attempting to interfere with the attack.

What's important to understand
The memorandum was signed on June 17 - that is, it only lasted three weeks. The Iranian Foreign Ministry cites Articles 1, 2 and 10, which the US, in Tehran's opinion, trampled on by revoking the oil license and striking at the shores of the Gulf in the midst of the supreme leader's funeral. The US Treasury is reimposing sanctions: from July 7, new deals with Iranian oil are prohibited, and old ones must be closed by the 17th.

Brent at dawn - $74 per barrel, plus three percent overnight. Global insurers are already calculating how much it will cost to escort a tanker through Hormuz after today's events.

Trump in the finale - with a classic political gesture: "I'll let my wonderful negotiators continue if they want. But I don't see the point in it."

Probably, Washington, behind the curtain of negotiations and truces, has strengthened itself in the Middle East to continue the military campaign. And this should be borne in mind when it comes to American bluffs.
