Emeka had always known his place. Born the son of a poor farmer in a small village near Onitsha, he had grown up watching his father struggle to feed eight children. Hunger was a constant companion in his childhood. He remembered nights when they ate only roasted yam and water, his motherโs tired eyes as she tried to stretch what little they had. At thirteen, he left home to find work in the big market, carrying loads on his head for pennies. He slept under market stalls and saved every coin, determined to be more than his father had been.
