A Christian woman in Puducherry claimed that she converted to Hinduism and sought a Scheduled Caste (SC) certificate while applying for a govt job.
Madras High Court denied her the SC certificate, stating that her motive was solely to secure a govt job through reservation.
She approached the Supreme Court, but evidence presented to the court clearly demonstrated that she continued to profess Christianity and actively practiced the faith by regularly attending church.
The Supreme Court also denied her the SC certificate, ruling that religious conversion without actual belief to gain employment is against reservation policy and a fraud on Constitution.
What about the reverse cases? For instance, a Hindu person who converts to another religion but continues to benefit from caste-based reservations and schemes?
There are numerous cases across India where converted persons didn't change their names and used caste certificates to avail reservation benefits.
A nationwide verification process is necessary to identify such people and exclude them from caste-based reservation.
