ペスト菌は犯人ではなかった

2026年10月、シベリアのイルクーツクでペスト菌の実験室事故が起きた。しかし、最も感染力が強いとされる肺ペスト菌が現代都市に放出されたにもかかわらず、200人の接触者のうち誰も発症しなかった。この事実が問いかけるのは、650年前の欧州を壊滅させた「黒死病」が 本当にペスト菌だったのか、ということだ。

通説では、1348年の黒死病はペスト菌（Yersinia pestis）によって引き起こされたとされる。その根拠は、ロンドンのイースト・スミスフィールド墓地から回収された歯のDNAだ。2011年の研究では、46本の歯から17本がスクリーニング検査で陽性となり、さらに5本が確認検査で陽性となった。しかし、この数字を統計的に精査すれば、証拠は崩壊する。

ベイジアンファクターを計算すると、確認検査ではペスト墓地と対照群の間に統計的差は認められない。シュネマン研究のファクターは0.31、ヘンシュ研究は0.23だ。これは、両群が同じ分布に従う確率が、異なる分布に従う確率の3〜4倍高いことを意味する。スクリーニング検査が標的とする遺伝子はペスト菌固有ではなく、大腸菌やCitrobacter koseriにも存在する。

陽性反応の多くは、ペスト菌以外の細菌との交差反応だった。

では、何が数百万の命を奪ったのか。答えは空から降ってきた。1345年頃の火山噴火が引き金となり、スペイン・ピレネーの年輪記録は1345年から47年まで3年連続の冷夏と長雨を示している。この異常気象は収穫の壊滅的失敗と、穀物の湿気によるカビ発生を意味した。

ここで因果の矢印が逆転する。人々を殺したのはペスト菌ではなく、湿ったライ麦に繁殖した麦角菌とフザリウムが生み出す猛毒だった。

麦角菌が生成するアルカロイドは末梢血管を収縮させ、壊疽を引き起こす。記録に残る「黒い斑点」や四肢の壊死は、ペストの症状ではなく、毒麦による中毒症状そのものだった。中世欧州には「聖アントニウスの火」と呼ばれる麦角中毒が蔓延し、1095年には聖アントニウス修道会が患者治療のために設立されたほどだ。

さらに、フザリウムが生成するT-2毒素は骨髄を破壊し、白血球を枯渇させる。栄養失調と壊血病で血管が脆くなった体は、毒素によって免疫システムを喪失し、最後は自らの体内にいたありふれた細菌による敗血症で死に至った。1942年から48年にかけてソ連で記録された「食中毒性無顆粒球症」は、約10万人を殺害し、同じ病態を示している。

この仮説は、ミラノとローマが黒死病を免れた理由も見事に説明する。これらの都市が生き残ったのは、衛生状態が良かったからではない。穀物の輸入を必要とせず、毒麦を食べずに済んだからだ。

生死を分けたのは、細菌の有無ではない。

ペスト菌は存在したかもしれない。しかし、それは死因ではなく、崩壊した宿主に日和見感染しただけの「結果」に過ぎない。我々が信じてきた「ペスト」という怪物は、火山と飢餓、そしてカビ毒が生み出した影に過ぎなかったのだ。

The falling debris rushed down the mountain (along the path marked Landslide Scar and Debris Flow Path) and temporarily blocked the flow of the Lhende Khola river, a major tributary of the Bhotekoshi, creating a temporary natural barrier dam and impounding water upstream into a barrier lake.

​Dam Breach & Flash Flood: The impounded water accumulated until the fragile natural dam failed, releasing a sudden, massive surge of water, mud, and debris downstream through the valley.

​Contributing Factors & Status
​Seismic Activity:
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded in neighboring Tibet shortly before the flood. While researchers and officials are investigating whether the tremor helped destabilize the high-altitude terrain and trigger the initial avalanche, a direct causal link has not been officially proven.

​Impact & Casualties:
The surge destroyed roads (including sections of China's G216 highway), swept away bridges, and flooded local settlements such as Thuman village. Over 30 deaths have been confirmed, and while early chaotic reports feared up to 1,000 missing, official counts indicate around 380–400 people (including hundreds of foreign tourists and local villagers) missing or unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue.
