Zaira, you speak of freedom while conveniently forgetting the freedom India gave you to enter Bollywood, work in mainstream cinema, make films, win national recognition and ultimately walk away from it by your own choice. Nobody stopped you.

Yet when Kashmiri children exercise their own freedom by singing, dancing and celebrating India on Independence Day, you call them “stage props” and turn their celebration into a religious and intellectual controversy.

A Waqf Board being a religious institution does not make Independence Day an alien celebration. Muslims being Muslim does not make them less Indian. And Kashmiri children celebrating India should not be treated as something requiring ideological justification.

What is genuinely troubling is the suggestion that an Indian national celebration is somehow alien to a Kashmiri Muslim institution, something it should be expected to question rather than embrace. That framing says far more about the prejudice behind the argument than about the children on that stage.

You had the freedom to choose your place in India. Have the grace to allow Kashmiri children the same freedom to choose their place in it, and celebrate India.
