“When Home Smells Like Smoke”
#quote
My name is Mayank, and for most of my working life, Gurugram was more than a pin on a map,it was home.
We poured our life savings into a small flat in Sector 52, the kind where every corner holds a memory: the height marks on the wall, the laughing dinners, the windows that caught the last light of the day.
Every evening, the air grew heavier—first a sweet, sickly haze, then a harsh sting, like the bitter aftertaste of burnt plastic.
You could see it, smell it, feel it in your eyes.
The main culprit near our area was the stretch behind Fuel Nation Petrol Pump on Ardee City–Wazirabad Road. There, a secondary garbage collection point operated by MCG often resorted to burning waste instead of sending it to the Bandhwari processing plant. Scrap vendors burned tyres and wires to extract oil and metal. An illegal slum nearby added to the chaos, burning plastic, thermocol, and garbage—sometimes to cook food, sometimes just to stay warm. Every evening, the air carried the stench of carcinogens. You could smell the poison. The sky held their stories in a dirty haze. And every breath felt like a choice we didn’t want to make. We filed grievances. We tweeted. We waited.
Inside our home, the battles were smaller but more brutal: nebulizers humming on the dining table, antibiotics lined up like soldiers, children sleeping with smoke filled in their bedroom. Headaches that started at noon and stayed. Eyes that burned like tiny fires. We learned to close windows against the evening, not to keep out mosquitoes, but to keep out the city we loved.
In March 2024, we did the unthinkable: we left. An internal job move gave us a lifeline to Pune, and for a while, we learned what clean air feels like. It smells like nothing. It feels like freedom.
But life turns, and we must return to Gurugram—work, education, roots pulling us back. And I am afraid, not of a city, but of the air itself.
No family should have to flee to breathe. No child should have to earn a lungful of clean air.
Clean air isn’t a luxury. It’s a right.
And a right denied often begins with a story ignored.

Day #15 -Untraceable for 15 Days: Demand Answers, Demand Justice.
Angom Prafullo: Lost in the System, Found in Our Hearts. And the SEARCH continues….

Millinium City, Gurugram's escalating garbage problem is a multifaceted crisis. Not only does it pose health risks, but it's also a road safety issue. Piles of waste obstruct roads, encroaching the walkways, reduce visibility, stray animals affecting mobility and increasing the likelihood of accidents. Addressing this problem is crucial for the overall safety and well-being of the city's residents.
