#KnowledgeWithoutEgo#OriginalResearch#MentorshipMatters#NoToToxicSupervision#EmpowerStudents#EgoFreeAcademia
As supervisors, we demand original knowledge from our students, so we must also accept that, at some point, their ideas will surpass ours. Their work will be something we have not read, thought, or engaged with before. That’s the point of originality. Too often, I have seen or heard of supervisors let ego get in the way, refusing to allow their students to rise above them. That culture is toxic. We must end it. The measure of a good supervisor is not how tightly they hold on to their own authority, but how freely they make space for their students to grow beyond them.
A sweet milestone, quite literally! 🍰
Two of my wonderful PhD International Relations students, Fazal Elahi Bilal @bilalKEMU and Akif Rashid @AkifGujjar9 have reached the all-important stage of submitting their full dissertations to me for the final read before they head to the external examiners. An incredible journey for them, and a proud moment for me as their supervisor.
This cake was their way of welcoming me back to Pakistan and (very cleverly!) asking me to be gentle with my own ‘internal review’ of their work before it is sent for an external review.
Here’s to perseverance, scholarship, and the joy of seeing years of hard work come together in bound volumes of knowledge.

Cappadocia is a geological oddity of honeycombed hills and towering boulders of otherworldly beauty. The fantastical topography is matched by the human history here. People have long utilised the region's soft stone, seeking shelter underground, fascinating cavern architecture.🇹🇷
