It was an absolute honor to represent the @EGACampaign at the Nobel Peace Conference, which focused on the global regression on women’s rights.
Thank you @NobelPeaceOslo spotlighting the plight of women in Afghanistan & Iran and why the codification of gender apartheid matters.
@akila_rad, a human rights lawyer & legal advisor to the End Gender Apartheid campaign participated at the Nobel Peace Conference to discuss efforts to codify gender apartheid as a crime against humanity under international law.

Four years ago, the Supreme Court stripped away a fundamental Constitutional right and put abortion care out of reach for millions of Americans.
Today, we're sending a different message. With New York State, we are investing $495,000 to expand the NYC Abortion Access Hub, connecting more people to abortion care, medication, transportation, lodging and support services, no matter where they live.
Abortion is health care. Health care is a human right. We're protecting that right in New York City.
With a deep sense of betrayal, I addressed the European Parliament today, where I challenged the contradiction and lack of consistency at the heart of current EU policy toward the Taliban, focusing on the European Commission's invitation of the Taliban's regime of gender apartheid to the political heart of the European Union.
We need a principled, coherent, and unified approach across all EU institutions and Member States. Inconsistency not only undermines our rights and dignity, but also raises serious questions about EU complicity in the normalization of oppression and a regime that stands in direct contradiction to the EU's own legal obligations, and human rights commitments.
Grateful to @linagalvezmunoz and @EP_GenderEqual for convening this timely hearing, and to all participants who expressed solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, especially its women and girls.

#Taliban shouldn't be invited to #Brussels. This gives into blackmailing & normalisation.
Together with fellow parliamentarians & former Afghan parliamentarians, I sent an open letter to @Bart_DeWever & @vonderleyen#EU shouldn't trade its principles for deportation deals.

The @EU_Commission has invited the Taliban to Brussels today to discuss deportations of Afghan nationals.
@amnesty firmly urges the EU and its states to abandon any deportation plans with the Taliban de facto authorities.

Non-refoulement is absolute & non-derogable. No exceptions allowed, no assurances from dfA can neutralize this risk. Torture remains a genuine risk in #Afghanistan. I urge the EU & its member states not to return Afghans to danger. @EU_Commission
Honored to write this piece on reproductive violence, genocide & Gaza with @Payal_K_Shah. We look at how reproductive violence can evince both genocidal intent & multiple genocidal acts & how such evidence should be considered in accountability settings.

In 2023, we saw it coming.
Our Bishnaw survey of 3,848 women across 24 provinces showed the Taliban were deliberately creating conditions for child marriage — and had no intention of stopping, despite their public messaging.

The #UNSC must uphold international law and well-established #WPS norms—particularly as language on gender equality, preventing gender-based violence, women’s participation, and sexual and reproductive rights is contested and actively removed from Council decisions.
There’s a worrying trend at the United Nations: more and more civil society organizations are being blocked from participating in our meetings and processes. Last week, Sweden joined a group of countries in highlighting this development. See our statement here: https://t.co/xMYxt4BreE
An entire generation of Afghan girls have had their aspirations suspended by policies systematically excluding them from education and public life. https://t.co/uIuG34jtBP
.@UN_Women is “gravely concerned” by the arrest of at least 30 women in Herat city last weekend in Afghanistan for allegedly violating dress requirements imposed by Taliban authorities.

🗣️"The Taliban’s oppression of women is not incidental, but central to their model of governance: they have created a system of total control."
EGA's @Metra_Mehran briefed the #UNSC, highlighting the importance of recognizing the Taliban's system of control as gender apartheid.
"Since Aug 2021, the Taliban have enacted over 230 decrees directly targeting women, girls and LGBTQI+ individuals because of their gender, by denying them nearly every fundamental human right," @Metra_Mehran tells the #UNSC.
"The women and girls of Afghanistan cannot afford international inaction."
@Metra_Mehran underscores that the women of #Afghanistan are pursuing every available pathway to hold the Taliban accountable.
Powerful last words from @Metra_Mehran to the #UNSC: the situation in #Afghanistan is "a test of whether the principles recited in chambers like this truly mean anything in practice."

Today, we stand with @Metra_Mehran as she briefs the #UNSC on the Taliban’s repression of women's rights — as well as the resistance of women — in #Afghanistan.

Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write.
