“We will not backtrack an inch. Till Gyanesh Kumar resigns, we will be here on the path of agitation and protest.”
Member of Parliament John Brittas, leader of the CPI(M)’s Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha, spoke from Janpath-Ashoka Road roundabout, where the Delhi Police stopped Opposition MPs from reaching Jantar Mantar to hold a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The police brutally manhandled and detained the MPs, preventing them from exercising their democratic right to peacefully assemble and protest.
During today’s media interaction, Neha Bora (@neha_aisa) and Saurav Das (@SauravDassss) say Delhi Police has been formally informed about the planned October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar, along with the required undertakings.
They reject the idea that protesters must seek “permission”, arguing that their responsibility is to intimate the police so arrangements for law and order and traffic can be made.
They also say young people across political affiliations are being called to join the protest over voting rights and the Election Commission, and that the demonstrations will continue.
