Can Chennai Airport Build a Parallel Runway on OTA Land? ✈️

Many assume acquiring the Officers Training Academy (OTA) land would unlock a massive upgrade—specifically, a parallel runway for Chennai Airport (MAA).

Looking at ICAO standards, here is the technical reality:

❌ Why Another Runway Won't Work:

Parallel to Main Runway (07/25): Parallel operations require 760 m to 1,035 m centerline separation—the parcel simply lacks the required north–south depth.

Obstacle Surfaces (OLS): An eastward approach profile collides directly into St. Thomas Mount and dense urban settlements.

Parallel to Secondary Runway (12/30): The available ground length is far too short to fit a Code-C runway strip and safety zones (RESA). Even a small third runway is practically impossible.

💡 Where OTA Land Actually Helps:

Remote Parking Bays: Frees up saturated contact gates, clears apron bottlenecks, and expands critically needed night-parking stands.

A true parallel runway at Meenambakkam is physically impossible—which is why the greenfield project is necessary. But to push MAA’s existing runway to its absolute single-runway peak, OTA ground space remains invaluable.

I really hope we somehow get HD Hyundai to Thoothukudi. Earlier DMK Govt got it & further TVK Govt pursued it too. This is a game changing investment for whole of South TN. @Keerthana4VNR @CMOTamilnadu @Guidance_TN @deepakj2012 plz get it done. Can't be losing this...🙏🙏
