Sad news just in. 🙏🏽

British-American Playwright and novelist #BonnieGreer has died aged 77. Her husband David Hutchins announced her death saying:

“It is with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved wife, Bonnie Greer, has died aged 77 after a brief illness.

“Bonnie was an acclaimed playwright, author, critic, cultural and political commentator whose intelligence, courage and distinctive voice made an enduring contribution to British cultural and public life."

Speaking in 2016 in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter movement, Greer said: "When I wake up in the morning, I'm just myself. It's only when I leave the door that I become a black woman to the world."

She added: "I tell black women all the time, 'Don't apologise for yourself and keep your hair nappy. Make sure you are heard'."

On this day in 1963, four little girls, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair, were killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, an act of racial and political violence meant to silence a movement.

We honor their memory by insisting that Black girls deserve protection, safety, and the freedom to simply be children. Their lives call us to confront hate wherever it lives and to build a future where violence is never a weapon against justice.
