#UPDATE: Qatari Military Aircraft Reportedly Brings Troops for Deployment to Baidoa and Baraawe

A Qatari military aircraft landed at Mogadishu’s airport on Friday afternoon carrying military equipment and troops transported from Türkiye. The federal government reportedly plans to deploy the troops to Baidoa and Baraawe in Southwest State.

The account of the arrival did not specify the troops’ nationality, number or intended mission. It also did not identify the equipment aboard the aircraft or give a timetable for the reported deployments.

The troops had previously been sent to Türkiye for military training and returned to Somalia on Friday, according to the same account.

The reported arrival comes amid a confrontation between federal authorities and supporters of former Southwest leader Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed “Laftagareen” over control of the regional administration.

In a statement dated September 3, the information ministry aligned with Laftagareen accused Türkiye of using F-16 aircraft against his forces in Baidoa. It alleged that Ankara had intervened in an internal political dispute and demanded disclosure of who requested and authorised the operation.

Those allegations remain unverified. The reported military arrival in Mogadishu does not establish a connection to the alleged Baidoa strikes.

The development also follows competing accounts of an overnight incident at the Doolow residence of former prisons chief Gen. Mahad Abdirahman “Shub.” Jubbaland authorities and Somali opposition figures described it as an airstrike, with some accusing T��rkiye of carrying out an assassination attempt.

Somalia’s federal government denied involvement in the Doolow incident. Its information ministry said preliminary security information indicated that explosives being prepared inside a house had detonated, and promised a fact-finding investigation. Neither explanation has been independently verified.

Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre has warned against using armed drones in political disputes, while former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has urged security agencies to remain outside political confrontations.

Ukraine: The U.S. Department of State recommends U.S. citizens not travel to Uman, Ukraine, for the annual pilgrimage to the grave of Rebbe Nachman during Rosh Hashanah. This recommendation is consistent with the State Department’s current Travel Advisory for Ukraine which remains Level 4: Do Not Travel. Since the war began, Russian airstrikes have struck civilian buildings and critical infrastructure across Ukraine – including in Uman – hitting homes and places of worship, often without warning. Local authorities have advised that Uman does not have enough air raid shelters to accommodate all anticipated travelers to the pilgrimage. Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.
