In 1994, Ukraine agreed to give up the Soviet nuclear weapons on its territory. Russia, America, and Britain signed the Budapest Memorandum, promising to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders.

By 1996, Ukraine had surrendered those weapons.

In 2014, Russia seized Crimea. In 2022, Putin launched a full-scale invasion.

Ukraine honored its commitment. Russia broke its fucking word.

Now let’s talk about NATO.

Ukraine had an official policy of nonalignment when Russia seized Crimea in 2014. Ukraine wasn’t a NATO member when Putin invaded in 2022.

Yes, Putin complained about NATO expansion. But he also publicly questioned Ukraine’s independent statehood.

Claiming NATO left Putin no choice is bullshit. He made the decision to invade a sovereign country.

Ukraine trusted security assurances that failed to protect it. Now Ukrainians are dying defending their homeland.

So if you’re claiming Putin was forced into this war because of NATO, bring actual historical evidence, not Kremlin talking points.

After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Congress passed the Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act 100-0 in the Senate. The law bans Russian diesel and other energy products. It can ONLY be lifted after the president certifies to Congress that Russia has withdrawn from Ukraine and ended hostilities (accepted by Ukraine), poses no immediate NATO threat, and recognizes Ukrainian self-determination, then waits through a congressional review period.

None of that has happened. The president instead directed Treasury to issue a temporary OFAC license reopening Russian diesel imports. This bypasses the requirements of a law that passed the Senate UNANIMOUSLY. The president does not have the authority to override it this way, and it is not in America’s interest to do so.

To be honest and clear, Zelensky did none of those things. The Ukraine Constitution bans holding elections during the time martial law has been declared, something only the Rada can do and must renew annually. And it's the Rada that passed laws outlawing pro-Russian parties and churches aligned with the RUSSIAN Orthodox Church. Independent print, digital, and investigative media continue to operate privately in Ukraine.
