The new Native Tree Area Scheme will pay farmers €20k for a hectare of native woodland over ten years.

Allowing new natural regeneration on sites adjoining old woodlands to be eligible for the scheme would be a really positive move.

@EamonRussell1 We are trying to replicate a ‘natural’ distribution as best we can so it’s fairly ‘random’. Some areas we are tight (1.5-2m) and some areas we have larger gaps (3-5m). Overall we intend to plant in clusters and then predominantly allow natural regeneration.

On Sunday, to celebrate the life of Brigid and the dawn of our Celtic spring, we got together to plant 120 oak seedlings harvested ourselves 2yrs earlier. This marks the start of our project which will eventually quadruple the size of our woodland, Ardan. What a moment it was!

@PadraigMacA Very simple with oaks… push the acorn an inch deep into a pot. Larger pots are more reliable as they hold moisture better. Keep on north side of house in sheltered area. Keep moist in warm months. Protect from mice etc with netting if needed.
