I said this in a reply to someone else but here it is again, the nuance of Tai Lung's character (in my opinion):
Tai Lung is first presented as a madman, hungry for power and wanted the Dragon Scroll because he lusted for overwhelming strength. We see in several flashbacks his sheer skill and talent for Kung Fu which leads us to believe this is the case. We see how prideful he is when he faces and defeats the Furious Five which further cements the idea that he only wants the scroll for power.
Only until he faces off against Shifu, the one who raised him, do we see the nuance. He doesn't meet Shifu as a madman, he meets him as a former son and student. He confronts his adoptive father, finally expressing that all he was ever trying to do was make his father proud. You hear real genuine emotions in his dialogue and his expressions speak volumes.
Tai Lung's expressions when Shifu apologizes for falsely building him up to believe he was the Dragon Warrior, telling him he's always been proud. You see Tai Lung wake up for the first time, he has a real moment of inner conflict and you could say almost considers stopping himself from continuing. But he's too far gone at this point and wants the scroll.
You don't get this nuance if you don't take your story seriously. You don't get this nuance if you don't take your characters seriously. You don't get this nuance if the characters don't take themselves or each other seriously.
When I was younger I thought Tai Lung was very one note, but as I got older I realize there's a lot of depth to his character.
