Nigeria may not be facing a constitutional vacuum today, but there is a disturbing vacuum of political leadership.

I have travelled, lived and spent time abroad, and I have never pretended otherwise. But there is a fundamental difference between the travels of a private citizen and the responsibility of the sitting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Consider what Bola Tinubu is leaving behind. Petrol priced beyond the reach of ordinary people. Families rationing food. Transport fares that have turned a journey to one’s own village into a luxury. Insecurity that buries Nigerians week after week. And in the middle of all this, President Tinubu has packed his bags for three weeks in Europe.

The Vice President is abroad on official duty. That makes the President’s decision even more difficult to understand. Leadership is not merely the constitutional right to occupy an office; it is the judgment to know when your country needs you at home.

A father may travel when all is well. But when his roof is burning and his family is trapped inside, he does not pick up his suitcase and head for the airport.

That is the issue here. It is not that a President must never rest or travel. It is that Nigeria is burning, and the President has chosen a boarding pass over the fire extinguisher.

Millions of Nigerians are being grounded by hardship while their President is airborne. The people can barely afford to move, but the President keeps moving.

A government that cannot feel the pain it inflicts will never summon the will to end it.

Tinubu made Nigeria expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again. -AA

Because of the way I love Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Law, in 2009/2010, when I visit my sister who then was living in Zaria with the husband (an ABUSITE), I will dress in suit and walk down to the front gate of Kongo campus to take a picture.

That picture always motivate me anytime I look at it and that propelled me to continue to hustle for admission in same institution until I got in to study same Law in 2015.!

I honestly can’t remember how many times I travelled from Samaru to PZ just to sell my phone, buy a cheaper one, and survive on whatever was left. Sometimes it was handouts, sometimes sheer struggle, but that was life at ABU Zaria.

Nine years after graduation, I still find myself holding the same certificate, with no meaningful employment opportunity from the government. This is what frustrates me about Nigeria: we spend years educating young people, only to abandon them at the point where they need the system most.

This is why I will continue to hold our representatives from Katsina accountable. If you have been given a seat, access, influence and resources, please remember the young people coming behind you. Use that opportunity to open doors for those who have the capacity but lack connections.

Political positions are temporary. Today you may be the person everyone is calling; tomorrow, you may be the one wondering why you didn’t help when you had the chance.

Don’t wait until you leave that seat before realizing how many lives you could have changed. Help the growing ones while you still can. Tomorrow is a very long road.

FIFA’s own criteria stated the award was for performances from _19th December 2022 to 20th August 2023_. The World Cup Final was on the 18th. So the tournament barely counted.

In that window, Erling Haaland won the treble with Manchester City, scored 52 goals in 59 games, and broke the Premier League record. Kylian Mbappe scored 41 goals and scored a World Cup Final hattrick.

Messi? He won Ligue 1 with PSG, was named “top assister in France” and “Ligue 1 Team of the Season,” and then spent half the voting period playing in MLS.

And yet Messi won. The reason given had nothing to do with dominance. It was narrative. The humble legend. The World Cup glow. The need to crown him again.

That’s exactly Mourinho’s point. It wasn’t about who was the best player. It was about politics.

A History of Politics Beating Performance
2023 wasn’t the first time. It’s just the most recent.

2010 - Messi over Sneijder, Xavi, Iniesta
Sneijder won the UCL, Serie A, and reached a World Cup Final. Xavi and Iniesta won the World Cup and La Liga. Messi won nothing but scored 47 goals. The award shifted from “trophies” to “individual brilliance.” Marketing and global appeal won.

2018 - Modric over Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe
This one was deserved on paper. Modric won the UCL and reached a World Cup Final. But the timing was political too. It was the “break the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly” vote. After 10 years of the same two names, voters wanted a statement.

2021 - Messi over Lewandowski
Lewandowski scored 53 goals, won the Bundesliga and Golden Boot. Messi won the Copa America. That one international trophy was enough to override an entire year of club dominance. So obvious was the robbery that FIFA invented a “Striker of the Year” award just to give Lewandowski something.

Each case follows one of four patterns Mourinho is tired of:

1. The Trophy Narrative: _“He won the World Cup/UCL”_ — 2006 Cannavaro, 2018 Modric.
2. The Legacy Narrative:_“It’s his turn”_ — 2010 Messi, 2021 Messi, 2023 Messi.
