Hate to boomer post... but I remember a Canada with sub-$1 gas.
A Canada where the lady at Tim Hortons called you "Hun."
I remember a Canada where we didn't lock our doors, and the latchkey kid came over for dinner.
A Canada where we had a sense of community... a nation representative of our ethnic stock.
A time when Avril Lavigne was a heartthrob and Sum 41 was blasting at the house party. MuchMusic, the Mackenzie Brothers, Red Green, MacGyver, Bubbles and Ricky... literal Scuffed Loyalists (mullets weren't uncommon).
We were proud of ourselves, had dignity, and saw a prosperous future. The phrase "we live in a free country" actually meant something.
Where young families could buy a starter home and you could actually get by on a single income. A dominating middle class, shared traditions, and a warm glow in our hearts.
Defined by our "get 'er done" attitude, forged in the crucible of harsh wilderness.
What happened? Immigration.
Is it really so bad to want to go back?
